My Dog Has Fleas, Now What?

No one wants to see their best furry friend covered in fleas, but it’s a common affliction for canines. Fleas are small, dark brown parasitic insects that can infest the coats and skin of pets. They make dogs itch, which leaves red welts. If transferred to humans, they can cause the same symptoms.

These parasites survive by feeding on the blood of warm-blooded hosts such as dogs. To verify your pet has fleas, inspect their fur with a comb or your fingers, paying special attention to warm, tender, protected spots such as the armpits, ears, and groin area. Fleas are most likely to invade these vulnerable areas.

If you suspect your dog has fleas, the first step is to call a flea exterminator in Fort Worth before they spread to your family, bedding and furniture.

How to Get Rid of Your Dog’s Fleas

Professional treatment is a proven and effective way to get rid of fleas, but here are a few things you can try first before calling us.

Use a Flea Comb

This is the easiest and most effective method of flea removal. This grooming tool can be used to comb your dog’s fur. The teeth are very finely spaced so it’s easier to trap and remove not only the fleas, but the eggs and flea “dirt” from the fur.

Enhance Your Dog Shampoo

You can spend a lot of money on specialty dog flea shampoo, but you don’t have to. All you need to do to turn ordinary dog shampoo into flea shampoo is this:

  • Add a half a cup dog shampoo to half cup squeezed lemon juice.
  • Mix with two cups of water.
  • Pour the mixture into a bottle.
  • Use it to bathe your dog every week.

The citrus component of the lemon is good for removing fleas. The larger your dog, the more shampoo you will need to use.

Clean and Vacuum Floors Every After Grooming

Regular grooming is critical in keeping fleas at bay. Use a combination of flea-repellant sprays with hair moisturizer to regrow your dog’s fur while getting rid of fleas at the same time. After the fleas are gone, make a habit of cleaning the floors and other areas where you groomed your dog. Otherwise, fleas can establish their habitat and return stronger than ever and in greater number.

To get rid of all fleas, flea eggs and flea dirt (poop) from your home, you will need to be diligent about cleaning for the next several days.

  • Vacuum upholstered furniture (chairs, couches, mattresses) and all floors, rugs, carpets, and baseboards. This will help to remove eggs that have fallen off pets and lodged in crevices.
  • Empty the vacuum each time into a sealed bag, disposing of the waste in an outside trash bin. Frequently wash pet bedding on hot, and then dry either on high heat or in direct sunlight.
